Broken Top
The Eroded Remains of a Towering Stratovolcano

With a summit at 9,175 feet, Broken Top is a shadow of its former self. Roughly 125,000 years have passed since its last eruption, and in that time snow and ice have ground away at the peak. Two glaciers still cling to the slopes below the jagged ridges that frame grand cirques once filled with rivers of ice. On the exposed cliffs, vibrant layers of igneous rock tell the stories of eruptions from long ago.

On Wikipedia
Broken Top is an extinct, glacially eroded stratovolcano in Oregon, part of the extensive Cascade Range. Located southeast of the Three Sisters peaks, the volcano, residing within the Three Sisters Wilderness, is 20 miles (32 km) west of Bend, Oregon in Deschutes County. Eruptive activity stopped roughly 100,000 years ago, and currently, erosion by glaciers has reduced the volcano's cone to where its contents are exposed. Bend and Crook Glaciers are the two named glaciers on the peak.

Broken Top sits within the
Three Sisters Wilderness
, and hikes around its flanks and up its rocky slopes afford grand views of the Three Sisters as well as
Mt. Bachelor
. As the snow melts, the meadows surrounding the volcano bloom with wildflowers while lakes locked in ice free up for the brief summer. High on the eastern side of Broken Top, a glacial lake sits locked in an ice-free cirque behind an old moraine. From the ridge above, the views stretch all the way up to
Mt. Adams
in Washington.
