Tunnel Tree
The First Giant Sequoia Tunnel Tree
Redwood Tree
in
Tuolumne Grove
in
Yosemite NP
,
Sierra Nevada
near
Foresta
,
CA
Cut in the late 19th century to allow coaches to pass through it (and as a marketing scheme to attract visitors to the grove), this is one of only three remaining giant sequoia tunnel trees. The tree reflects a time when cutting through living giant sequoia trees was an acceptable practice, though the Dead Tunnel Tree itself was already dead when cut.
The tree has a remarkable ghoulish appearance to it and is still a draw for visitors.

On Wikipedia
Tuolumne Grove is a giant sequoia grove located near Crane Flat in Yosemite National Park, at the southeastern edge of the Tuolumne River watershed. It is about 16 miles (26 km) west of Yosemite Village on Tioga Pass Road. The grove contains many conifers, including a few Sequoiadendron giganteum as well as Abies concolor and Pinus lambertiana. The grove hosts about six visible giant sequoias amongst a dense understory of dogwood. The grove also features the "Dead Giant", a fallen giant sequoia with a stagecoach-sized tunnel cut through it.
