Hiking
Starting Place:
Newton Lakes
This is an extensive trail system near Cody that is known for mountain biking, but it also is a great place to go hiking on a cool day. Bears have been seen in the area, so carry bear spray.
We began from East Newton Lake and followed the trail around the eastern shore to a junction with a trail to the right. Following this trail to a barb wire fence, we were able to cross at a gate. There are two gates here. The one on the right is easier to open and close.
Shortly after crossing the fence, there is a trail junction. We continued straight ahead to the Redneck Jungle Trail which follows Dry Creek and is flat for more than a mile. There was a good flow of water in the streambed.
At the junction with Twisted Sister, we took the right hand trail that stayed along Dry Creek. It continued as a well defined trail for awhile, crossing the creek often. Eventually the trail became overgrown and we turned around at a difficult creek crossing, backtracking to Twisted Sister.
Twisted Sister heads up a steep open hillside. A large cairn marks the top of the steepest part of the trail. From here, the trail meanders along an open hilltop all the way to the ridge that looks down on Trail Creek. More and more of Rattlesnake Mountain comes into view as the trail continues up. Heart Mountain also appears as the trail climbs.
At the junction of Twisted Sister and Above the Law, we turned left to follow Above the Law southeast along the ridgeline. The trail stays high crossing many rocky outcrops. It can be hard to see, but look for cairns marking the way. A well formed small arch is a highlight of this section of trail.
There are several trails intersecting Above the Law (Outlaw and Scorpion) that also lead down to the starting point but we stayed on Above the Law which eventually become Anarchy.
Anarchy (well named) drops very quickly and steeply off the ridgeline but offers great views of Newton Lakes, Cody, and Cedar Mountain, if you pause to look around.
The trail meets up again near the fence to complete the loop, and we continued back to the parking area at East Newton Lake.
