Intending to hike a couple of miles along the shore of Fish Lake I was lured by a sign to the Rim Overlook. After a fairly steep climb from the shore to the rim there was no actual indication that I had reached the overlook other than a bench. The rim continued to climb higher to my north and there was a trail so I followed it to the high point. However, that point was completely surrounded by trees and the best view did turn out to be from the bench.
My hike did not start at the trailhead for the Rim Overlook Trail, I parked in the dispersed camping area which added about a half mile each way. Access both to the place I started and the actual trailhead requires a vehicle with good clearance, when wet 4x4 is suggested.
