The Verdun Trail leads to only one place: Hell’s Half Acre. Both names refer to important battles: Verdun in WWI, and Hell’s Half Acre in the American Civil War (the Battle of Murfreesboro). The names have nothing to do with the natural features. Hell’s Half Acre in Oregon is not hellish at all; it is a rather lovely hillside meadow. Springs in the lower part of the meadow water a garden of mimulus, shooting-stars, and buttercups. Higher up, bunchgrass dominates.
The trailhead is on Forest Road 5883 at about 4500 feet; after a climb it passes across a level area at about 4700 feet below a northeast-facing slope; for some reason this area holds snow late into the season, and route-finding may be tricky through June.
