Mount Yoran
An Imposing Crag in Beautiful Surroundings

Mount Yoran’s chunky spire stands out against nearby Diamond Peak’s higher but longer profile. Seen from Highway 58 to the north, it looks like a serious rock climb, but the standard climbers’ route is on the south, and is not quite as formidable. The route goes up the chute to the right of the summit (shown in the picture), then crosses through a notch onto an exposed but low-angled knobby basalt face (not visible in the picture). Scrambling up this leads to onto granite-like gray andesite, and to the summit.

The trail to Mount Yoran and the surrounding area is worth a visit even if climbing the mountain is not on the agenda. The trail passes scenic Notch Lake, then climbs through subalpine forest to a long ridge with views to the south. Small Divide Lake (pictured) lies at the foot of the mountain, and to the south, scattered meadows and ponds await the off-trail explorer.
