Bald Ridge and Bald Peak are prominent features of the landscape north of Cody. They are easily seen on the west side of Wyoming Highway 120, rising over 3,000 feet from the highway. The town of Clark and the Clark’s Fork Canyon are located just north of the ridge and peak. The hike to the top is easy in the summer and fall when there is access from a forest road. The area is closed from December 15 through April 30 to protect winter habitat for elk and deer.
Getting There
From Cody, drive about 12 miles north on Wyoming Highway 120 to the junction with the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway. Turn west and travel 11.5 miles to a junction with Forest Road 100 (across the highway from the Northwest College Field Station). Turn north on this road. High clearance 4 wheel drive is necessary and at times, may be impassable. The road travels north through grassy meadows with great views of Heart Mountain for more than 5 miles. There are several roads branching off but the road is well signed. Stay on FR100. The road becomes rougher the farther you go. There is a junction near the end of the road that is a good place to park.
Hiking
Walk west up the road to the ridge and then follow it north northeast for less than 2 miles with an elevation gain of 1,100 feet to Bald Peak (elevation 8,633 feet). The ridge is very open although there are some downed trees to pick your way through. All along the edge of the ridge, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of Sunlight Basin and the Clark’s Fork Canyon. At the small rocky summit, the mountain drops away nearly 4,000 feet for a view of the Clark’s Fork River in the Clark’s Fork Canyon.
