Thinleaf Huckleberry
Vaccinium membranaceum (species)
Thinleaf huckleberry (
Vaccinium membranaceum
) is a huckleberry species native to North America. The plant is a small shrub, typically growing to be 1–5 feet tall. The plant grows in a variety of habitats, including coniferous forests, as well as in rocky and sandy soils. The thinleaf huckleberry has oval leaves that are finely toothed along the edges, with a prominent network of veins that give them a somewhat wrinkled appearance. The leaves are relatively thin, hence the name, and the bark on the stems is smooth, varying in color from greenish to reddish-brown.

Learn How to Take A Field Note
In the spring, you’ll notice the small, bell-shaped flowers that are usually a pale pink. Come late summer to early autumn, these flowers will have transformed into small, round berries. They start out red and gradually darken to a deep purple or black as they ripen.
Edibility
Thinleaf Huckleberries are indeed edible right off the bush and are high in antioxidants and vitamins. The berries are often used in jams, jellies, and syrups.
