Monotropa
genus
“Indianpipes”, “Corpse Plants”, “Ghost Plants”
The Monotropa genus is a group of plants that includes several species commonly known as Indian pipes or ghost plants. These plants are unique in that they are saprophytic, which means they obtain their nutrients from decaying organic matter rather than from photosynthesis – which means they are adept at living in spots with little sunlight. They are also known for their waxy appearance and the fact that they lack chlorophyll. Indian pipes are typically found in shady, damp areas such as woods and bogs.
