The Northern Sedimentary And Metasedimentary Ridges ecoregion extends from South Mountain, Pennsylvania, to the Roanoke River area. It is composed of high, steeply sloping ridges and deep, narrow valleys. Crestal elevations typically rise southward, from about 1,300 to 2,000 feet (396-610 m) in Pennsylvania, to a maximum of over 3,500 feet (1,067 m). Local relief also increases southward and reaches a maximum of about 1,000 feet (305 m).
