The high, rugged, glaciated Western Canadian Rockies ecoregion lies west of the Continental Divide and is affected by moist Pacific maritime air masses. Precipitation significantly exceeds that of the rainshadow area on the eastern slopes and groundwater levels are typically closer to the surface. Groundwater recharge rates are slow where the terrain is steep and the permeability of the bedrock is low.
