The very high and cold, low-relief Centennial Basin ecoregion is distinctively subirrigated. It contains grasslands, meadows, lakes, and extensive wetlands; sand plains, dunes, and lake deposits are common. Elevations range from more than 6,500 to 7,000 feet and the growing season is only about 50 days. Its aquic, cryic soils reflect its environment and are taxonomically distinct from those of the neighboring Dry Gneissic-Schistose-Volcanic Hills (17ab), Dry Intermontane Sagebrush Valleys (17aa), and Barren Mountains (17e). The mapped potential natural vegetation is sagebrush steppe. The Red Rock National Wildlife Refuge occurs in this ecoregion.
