Nez Perce War

Dead Indian Hill Summit Historical Marker

Dead Indian Hill Named For:

Nez Perce  1877 War version:
Accounts tell us that the Nez Perce left a wounded warrior on this mountain. He was discovered and killed by Army scouts. Thus this site became known as “Dead Indian Pass.”
— Shoshone National Forest Informational Sign atop Dead Indian Pass
Bannock 1878 War version:
Another version is that the name comes from an 1878 skirmish between General Miles and a group of Bannock Indians, where one Bannock was killed and buried here by Mile’s Crow Indian scouts .
