Cadillac Mountain In Winter
The elevation of Cadillac Mountain is 1,530 feet. The Cadillac Summit Road allows cars to drive to the summit of the Mountain where there is a gift shop and rest rooms. On a clear day views from the summit are some of the best in all of New England. Dennis Doonan, dynamite man for the Mccabe Company, was fatally injured on the project of building the Cadillac Summit road on 10 Sept. 1929. The account of his death is found on Deaths In Acadia National Park.
Before the summit road was built people reached the summit by way of horse drawn buckboards or by way of a cog train that operated along one side of the mountain. The train was run by the Green Mountain Railway Company, Cadillac Mountain being named Green Mountain in those days. The railroad company had big plans to build other cog train tracks up other mountain sides on Mount Desert Island but that never came to be after the company went bankrupt.
To reach the train, people rode out to Eagle lake from Bar Harbor, usually on buckboards, where they boarded a steamboat for the trip across the lake to where a pier was located. They than boarded the cog train for the very slow ride up to the summit of Green Mountain. In those days there was a hotel at the summit where passengers could get a meal or spent the night.
The steam boat was said to have been taken out to the center of Eagle lake and sunk after the Green Mountain Railroad Company went out of business.
