The monument was placed in 1883, marking the end of the period of historical significance (1877-1883). After this period and in contrast to the War Department’s narrow focus on honoring the soldier dead, the Forest Service took a more expansive approach to use of the site and encouraged public use for historical interest and recreation. Although the focus on visitor interpretation increased, the Nez Perce perspective was not included until the late 1920s. Since then, a number of changes have occurred at the site, but the overall setting still conveys the historic character of the landscape.
