Birthday Lake
A Peaceful High Forest Pond For Swimming

Birthday Lake is a shallow lake along the Fuji Mountain Trail. It warms quickly in the summer, though at 6000 feet snowbanks sometimes linger into July. Mosquitoes are a problem through mid-August. You’re likely to find solitude here, as most fishermen will pass it by (it’s probably fishless), and there are lots of other lakes closer to roads for those who don’t want to hike. But it is a lovely stop along the trail.

This little lake is not a hugely productive ecosystem, but dragonflies use it and there are mayfly hatches in the early summer. The picture below shows a larval salamander underwater in Birthday Lake. As it approaches adulthood, its feathery gills will shrink, its body will become slimmer and smaller, and it will migrate to land to live in moist places like rotting logs or mossy bogs. Salamanders are timid and completely harmless.
