The Mammoth Terraces Trail is a network of boardwalks around Yellowstone’s large travertine hot springs terraces at Mammoth. The trail begins at the base of the terraces and takes an hour or two to complete. The underground plumbing of Mammoth Hot Springs frequently changes causing new springs to emerge and old springs to go dry. One of the prettiest currently active springs is Canary Spring.
Travertine precipitation in locations where water continually flows at Mammoth Hot Springs has been recorded at rates upwards of 5mm or ¼ in/day and as much as 1 meter in a single year.
— Fouke et al., 2000; Kandianis et al., 2008; Veysey & Goldenfeld, 2008

Fall

In the Mammoth area, fall brings bull elk and their cows to the scenic yellow aspens, where their bugling calls fill the air.

Winter

The Mammoth Terraces Trail is also great in the winter, when the springs are especially steamy. The North Entrance Road from Gardiner, MT to Mammoth is one of the few roads open to cars in the winter, making it one of Yellowstone’s popular winter destinations.
