Shoshone Hot Spring

Active Blue-Green Hot Spring Below Shoshone River Siphon
Hot Spring in Colter’s Hell on Shoshone River, Heart Mountain Canal in Rocky Mountains near Cody, WY
Shoshone Hot Spring is a colorful hot spring right outside of Cody, WY on the western end of Colter’s Hell. There’s not a whole lot of information on the spring online, but local geologist Mark Fisher has written a great guide on the Cody Hydrothermal System here that includes the spring and an explanation of the greater geological context.
The area appeared on William Clark’s 1810 sketched map as "Boiling Spgs" [1], later transcribed and published in 1814 [2].

Getting Here

Park at the Hayden Arch Bridge Trailhead and take a right immediately at the end of the bridge, taking the small connector trail that heads up to the service road that ultimately connects to 2ABW. Stay on the road until you pass the road that heads down to the power station building below Shoshone River Siphon. After it, there’ll be an old worn-down road passing under the conduit that leads down to the hot spring.

When to See It

Shoshone Hot Spring is not visible during spring run-off season or when Buffalo Bill Dam is letting out a lot of water. With this in mind, the best time to see it is late summer and in winter.
