Wilson P. Hunt January 21, 1812 Campsite

Estimating the Astorians took the better part of a day to ford the Columbia River, a hypothetical campsite is placed north of present day Irrigon, OR. For the first time since leaving the Missouri River in what is today’s South Dakota, Hunt knew geographically where he was and the route to Fort Astoria (Hunt 1821; Irving 1836; Rollins 1935, 304).

Hunt noted in his diary:

We crossed the [Columbia] river because the Akaitchis told us that the trail passed along the right, or north, bank. (Hunt 1821)
