The Unglaciated Montana High Plains ecoregion is composed of treeless plains and hills. Internally-drained basins and deflation hollows locally occur and contain wildlife- rich wetlands and lakes. Elevations exceed 3,600 feet and rangeland is the most common land use; however, dryland farming occurs and is, on the whole, more common than in the Montana Central Grasslands (43n). Strong winds occur and are a significant erosion threat. Ecoregion 43o is underlain by Tertiary and Cretaceous shale, siltstone, and sandstone. Its soils are derived from residuum and support a potential natural vegetation of grama-needlegrass-wheatgrass.
