The Taos Plateau is a region of mostly Pliocene basaltic lavas with distinct cones of Pliocene composite volcanoes. This region has higher elevation volcanic cones than the San Luis Hills of 22a in Colorado; several cones are over 9000 feet and Ute Mountain is higher than 10,000 feet. The plateau surface has more sagebrush than Ecoregion 22a in Colorado. The plateau surface has only minor dissection, but the Rio Grande is confined to a deep canyon or gorge, 800 to 1000 feet deep in places. The ecoregion extends south to include the basalt-capped Black Mesa.
