The Platte River Valley region is a flat, wide alluvial valley with shallow, braided stream channels on a sandy bed; a contrast to the dissected loess-covered plains of neighboring regions 27b and 27e. The alluvial sand and silty soils support cultivated cropland with much of it in center pivot irrigation. Historically, seasonal flooding would scour the valley, inhibiting any significant growth of hardwood riparian vegetation, creating sandbar habitat important to many migrating and nesting bird species. Today, with flood control and extensive water withdrawal for irrigation, most of the former river channel is occupied by hardwood trees.
