The Northern Glaciated Limestone Valleys are broad, flat to somewhat rolling valleys. Soils developed over glacial till in this region are shallower, more fertile, and have less clay formation than the soils developed from earlier glacial till in New Jersey. Sinkholes and underground streams (karst) have developed in the limestone, reducing surficial drainage density. In karst areas, where surface and ground water are directly connected by erosional channels, agricultural chemicals and fertilizers may infiltrate ground water aquifers. Native vegetation has been mostly cleared for agriculture, but sugar maple and mixed hardwoods can be found in scattered woodlots and calcareous wetlands.
