Northern Glaciated Limestone Ridges, Valleys, and Terraces

Ecoregion in Appalachian Mountains in PA, NJ, NY
Print Map
Generate High-Quality PDF
The Northern Glaciated Limestone Valleys and Terraces ecoregion is a diverse area on the western edge of the Ridge and Valley ecoregion (67), containing mixed rock types and scattered karst terrain. In New York, Ecoregion 67l is wedged between the Mongaup Hills in Ecoregion 62b and Catskills Transition (60c) to the west and the Shawangunk Mountains in Ecoregion 67m to the east. Its easily erodible limestone surface is 500 feet below the surrounding hills and plateaus in some areas. The native forest cover is sugar maple-Appalachian oak forest. Although forest cover is less than in surrounding upland ecoregions (60c, 62b, and 67m), it is greater than that in other Ridge and Valley limestone valleys.
