The Cold Valleys contain bottomlands, terraces, marshlands, alluvial fans, and foothills that are nestled below the Partly Forested Mountains (17o). Mean annual frost-free season is brief, 40 to 90 days, and shorter than in the Sagebrush Steppe Valleys (80i). Potential natural vegetation is mostly sagebrush steppe. Wet bottomlands support sedges, rushes, and willows. Pastureland, rangeland, and small grain, alfalfa, and potato farming occur. Fields, streams, and marshes are important habitat for both nesting and migratory birds.
