In the north, the Eastern Adirondack Foothills are underlain by limestone and anorthosite, both of which have a high acid neutralizing capacity. The southern portion of the eastern foothills contains a mix of rock types with varied acid neutralizing capacities. The northern part of the ecoregion lies in the rain shadow of the Adirondack High Peaks (58z) and rainfall amounts are lower than in much of the rest of the Adirondacks. In addition, the Saranac and Ausable river valleys cut deeply into the Adirondack dome in the northern portion, allowing the incursion of milder climate conditions from the Champlain Lowlands to the northeastern slopes of the Adirondacks. White pine is a prominent species in this region. Some southern forest species, spreading through the Hudson Valley (59i) lowlands, reach their northern limits in the eastern foothills of the Adirondacks.
