The rugged, forested, glaciated Crazy Mountains ecoregion is geologically distinct from surrounding mountainous ecoregions. Its core is composed of Tertiary coarse- grained intrusive rocks and both dikes and sills radiate from it; away from the core, late- Cretaceous water-laid volcanics of the Livingston Formation are common. Average annual precipitation ranges from 16 to just over 50 inches; maximums are greater than in the mountainous ecoregions to the north and less than in the ranges to the south. The climax vegetation is mapped as subalpine fir and Douglas-fir forests. Logging is the major land use.
