The Anthracite ecoregion in eastern Pennsylvania comprises an area that has been extensively disturbed by anthracite coal mining and urban-industrial development. Landforms, soils, and vegetation have all been indirectly or directly affected by mining operations and subsequent runoff. Streams tend to be very acidic and to have high amounts of turbidity (Biesecker and George, 1966, Plate 1; Kinney, 1964, p. 16; Dyer, 1982a; Herlihy and others, 1990, Table IV). Associated habitat destruction has occurred. Crestal elevations range from about 1,000 to 1,650 feet (305-503 m) and local relief ranges up to 600 feet (183 m).
