The wet, severely exposed, glaciated High Elevation Rockland Alpine Zone contains jagged peaks, tarns, rockland, and talus deposits. It is often snowcapped and maximum annual precipitation is greater than in surrounding, but lower, ecoregions. Soils are stony and have a cryic temperature regime. Alpine tundra, alpine grassland, subirrigated meadows, and wetlands occur above timberline. Krummholz vegetation occupies windswept areas near timberline. Subalpine fir and whitebark pine are found in glacial cirques.
