The Adirondack High Peaks ecoregion occurs in the northeastern portion of the Adirondack Mountains where there is a high concentration of mountain peaks over 3000 feet. Ecoregion 58z covers the mid-elevation portions of the high mountains to 2800 feet; the subalpine and alpine areas above 2800 feet are described in the Upper Montane/Alpine Zone (58j). The prominent peaks are composed of igneous, erosion-resistant anorthosite dating from the Precambrian era.
