The Pacific Crest Trail loops around the base of the cone of Yapoah Crater, and a hike to the top is worthwhile for anyone interested in volcanic features. This young cinder cone – probably less than 2000 years old – is built of red, black, and yellow basaltic scoria. Near the center of the crater, a mass of black basalt stands above the central pit. Large lava flows from early eruptions of Yapoah Crater traveled about 5 miles north and east. The Yapoah lavas overlie the flows from Belknap and Little Belknap along McKenzie Pass, Highway 242. Yopoah cone is not breached, so the flows probably came from a vent at the base of the cone. Or, the cinder cone was the result of a final series of eruptions, and was erected on top of the lava flow.

The views above are from the south, but a more direct user trail leaves the Pacific Crest Trail on the northwest side of the cone, and climbs through a small stand of scattered trees to the rim. From the top, views stretch from Mount Hood in the north to the Three Sisters and, on a clear day, Diamond Peak in the southern distance
On the northeastern rim of the crater there are some poorly consolidated, colorful cinder formations which are worth investigating. .
