Pioneer Cabin is an old skiing locale built in 1938 that overlooks the Pioneer Mountains just 10 miles east-northeast of Ketchum, Idaho. It is a single building with 2 rooms, made in the style of many European alpine ski huts at the time, and was built to allow for easier skiing access in the Pioneer Mountains. Although there are no reservations or nightly fees, it can be used to sleep, camp, and cook in, as it’s customary for visitors to maintain the building during their stay. This results in the walls being covered in graffiti from its worldwide visitors, and the shelves constantly being stocked with a myriad of strange and unique gifts. There aren’t as many amenities as would be expected in a cabin or lodge with full management, however the several bunk beds equipped with sleeping pads and bags, as well as the fully functioning wooden fireplace make it a comforting refuge from the often freezing nights at its elevation of 9,440 ft. In addition to the decorations inside, the western-facing side of the roof sports the phrase, “The higher you get, the higher you get.”
Pioneer Cabin sits on the eastern edge of the Pioneer Mountains, one of Idaho’s highest, rockiest, and most rugged ranges. While only being 18 miles long and 20 miles wide, the Pioneers hold over a dozen peaks over 11,000 ft, with Hyndman Peak being the highest point at 12,009 ft, Idaho’s 9th highest peak and one of the state’s few over 12,000. After reaching Pioneer Cabin, the heart of these mountains, and Hyndman Peak itself, is on display for easily one of the best views in the entire range.
The cabin can be accessed from the Pioneer Cabin Trailhead, and following the Pioneer Cabin Trail directly eastward for just under 4 miles. The first 2.5 mile section is almost entirely uphill and winds through dozens of seemingly unique environments, with the scenery quickly changing between pine forests, wide meadows, and rocky slopes. Staying left on the trail for the following 1.1 miles allows for a much slower incline, but altogether gives the Pioneer Cabin Trail 2,572 ft of elevation gain. This trail is often used as an out-and-back, however on either the ascent or descent, the 4.9 mile Long Gulch Trail can be taken, and just the same as the Pioneer Cabin Trail does, the Long Gulch Trail starts at the Pioneer Cabin Trailhead, and ends at Pioneer Cabin itself.
The trailhead can be accessed from the I-75 when it changes into Main Street in Ketchum, and turning onto Sun Valley Road through Sun Valley, and after it changes into Trail Creek Road, turning onto National Forest Development Road 137 and following it until its end at the Pioneer Cabin Trailhead.
