Avalanche Basin

Lake and Waterfalls in the Heart of McDonald Valley

Basin in Glacier NP, Rocky Mountains near Lake McDonald Hotel, MT

This glacially-carved basin is reminiscent of a giant bowl and has enabled a biologically diverse ecosystem to form. Avalanche Lake is at its center, fed by numerous streams and waterfalls that originate at Sperry Glacier or surrounding sources.

One of the best resources to learn more about this unique location is Glacier Nation Park’s Avalanche Basin Podcast Series by the NPS and Environmental Studies Program at the University of Montana. There you can listen to six short podcasts that explain its unique geology, wildlife, cultural significance, and more.
