Beeverhead - Deerlodge National Forest is one of the most under-rated national forests found in southwestern Montana. It boasts a wide variety of activities and endless breath taking views for the avid or novice hiker. Our trip this past weekend consisted of 3 hikers with expert level skill, a very novice hiker & 3 children ranging in the ages of 7, 11, and 16. While the variety of skill, ambition & desire was extremely diverse we still managed to see countless picture perfect views and multiple heard of elk & deer. If your concerned about the active bear population be sure to follow the guidelines of how to properly store food & the need to always carry bear spray.
Our trip consisted of multiple off trail hikes that brought us along a beautiful 2-4 ft wide creek that wraps around multiple steep peaks. Along the way we stopped for a few well deserved hiking beers (and sodas for the kids) to take in the spectacular views. While a lot of the national forest is still impassible by vehicle due to snow drifts, there was still more then enough trails and wilderness then we could explore in a 3 day weekend. Ruby Creek Campground is a grounds maintained by MT FWP that has riverfront campgrounds along the Madison for the campers more interested in catching fish. There’s something for everyone here and highly recommend a trip any chance you get! Also, don’t forget your bug spray!
