Trooper Traverse
Backpacking
Originally completed in February of 1944 by the famed 10th Mountain Division, the Trooper Traverse offers spectacular views and varied terrain in very isolated conditions. While the backpacking version is a relative luxury compared to the ski traverse of yesteryear it’s not hard to imagine the rugged self-reliance and pure grit that the men who first completed it possessed.
The trips starts outside Leadville and takes you over three formidable mountain passes into the relative calm of Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness. You will need to pre-position a car at the Aspen parking lot. An nice alternative may to be to spend a night in Aspen and return the way you came. In any event, when you arrive in Aspen be sure to visit the Hotel Jerone and get an Aspen Crud, as the original members reportedly did.
