Johnson Reservoir (nobody ever says JVR) is the source of the Fremont River, a small dam at the northeastern increases the size of the natural lake considerably making the reservoir good for fishing and moderating the flow of the river. In the summer flocks of white pelicans take up residence, seeming oddly out of place at 9000 feet in the mountains. In winter bald eagles can be seen along the shores watching for fish until the water freezes solid. There are boat launches and pullouts along the northern shore where Utah highway 25 runs (closed in winter) but the other parts of the shoreline are very lightly visited.
