Leatherman Peak
Second Highest Mountain in Idaho
Peak
in
Challis NF
,
Rocky Mountains
near
Chilly
,
ID
Leatherman Peak, at 12,228 ft. is Idaho second highest mountain after
Borah Peak
. As such it is climbed quite often. The route up the mountain begins on the east side of the Lost River Range at the
West Fork Upper Pahsimeroi Trailhead
. It is a fairly pleasant and scenic hiking route to the summit of the peak, however getting to the trailhead is a different story. The road to the West Fork Pahsimeroi is one of the most atrocious roads in the entire state and really is the crux of the whole trip. Make sure you have 4WD, high clearance, several spare tires, and extra gas for this road. It really is quite bad but if you come prepared you will be fine.
